Permanent residence

From EP to PR: building a profile that gets approved.

Permanent residence is not won in the week you apply. It is earned across your Employment Pass years. The founders who are approved treated those years as the build, not the wait.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority does not publish a PR formula, but the profile that gets approved is consistent: a stable Employment Pass with renewals, a credible and rising salary, a real business that contributes to the economy, ideally in an in-demand sector, plus family ties and time settled in Singapore. Your EP years are when that profile is built. Applying with two to three years of a real track record beats applying at the earliest date with a thin one.

The EP is the platform, not the prize

Getting the Employment Pass can feel like the finish line. For PR it is the starting platform. Everything that happens on the pass, the company trading, the salary actually paid, local hiring, tax and CPF contributed, becomes the evidence of your contribution. A pass held quietly on a dormant company builds nothing; a pass on an active, growing business builds a case every month. The myth that six months is enough is unpacked in why the six-month idea is a myth.

What the authorities weigh

The profile that tends to get approved. Assessed together, not as a checklist.
FactorHow to build it on your EP
Economic contributionReal revenue, tax and CPF; a salary that rises credibly
Pass stabilityA renewed EP that shows you are established
SectorAn in-demand or strategic industry strengthens the case
Qualifications and ageRecognised education; a working-age profile
RootsFamily settled here, time in Singapore, community ties

Why being in an in-demand sector helps

The same logic that gives a Shortage Occupation List role bonus points under COMPASS works in your favour for PR: Singapore prioritises people who fill real economic needs. If your business sits in an in-demand or strategic sector, that strengthens both the Employment Pass and the later PR case. Where it fits naturally, we lean into it rather than against it.

Timing the application

You may apply once you have held a qualifying pass for about six months, but timing for strength matters more than timing for speed. Many founders are in a far better position after two to three years, with renewed passes, audited or filed accounts, a rising salary and a settled family. Processing then commonly takes about six months to a year, and a refusal is not final; reapplying after strengthening the profile is normal.

Building the profile over time

  • Keep the company genuinely trading, with clean financials and tax filed
  • Pay yourself a credible, rising salary on a proper payroll
  • Hire local staff and contribute CPF as you grow
  • Settle your family and build real ties to Singapore
  • Apply when the profile is strong, not on the earliest possible date

The bottom line

From EP to PR is a multi-year build, not a form. The work you do on the pass is the application. That is why we plan PR from day one and keep your company and profile strong throughout, set out in our PR and GIP service.

Questions people ask

How soon after getting my EP should I apply for PR? +

You can apply after holding a qualifying pass for about six months, but most founders are stronger after two to three years, with renewed passes, filed accounts, a rising salary and a settled family. Strength matters more than speed.

Does my industry affect my PR chances? +

Yes. Being in an in-demand or strategic sector strengthens a PR case, much as it helps an Employment Pass, because it signals stronger economic contribution.

What is the single biggest factor? +

For a founder, the substance of the business and your economic contribution: real trading, a credible salary, tax and CPF. A thin or dormant company is the most common reason a founder's PR application falls short.

How long does PR processing take? +

Commonly about six months to a year after submission. A refusal is not final; many applicants succeed on a later attempt after strengthening their profile.

Does having my family here help? +

Yes. A spouse and children settled in Singapore, and genuine time and ties here, are part of the profile the authorities weigh.
